Start With the Whole Mattress Situation

Before you buy anything, figure out what you are working with. Most dorm mattresses are Twin or Twin XL...and no, those are not the same thing! Twin XL is 5 inches longer, which matters if the student is taller than average. If you can, ask the school or residence office what size mattresses they use. Many universities post this information online (& some even try to sell you their cheap sheets too).

Buy sheets to match that size specifically. A Twin sheet on a Twin XL mattress will not cover the corners, no matter how many times you tuck.

Deep Pockets Are Not Optional

Once you know the mattress size, look for sheets with deep pockets ...ideally ones that fit up to 17 inches. Dorm mattresses often have a mattress pad or topper added on top, which makes the whole thing much thicker than expected.
